VCM+ New York Climate Week Events
We look forward to convening and connecting with our members at New York Climate Week! In order to ensure we are able to attend member events, we are hosting all of our events on Thursday, September 24th. Please feel free to see the events we have lined up below:
Status: Closed Door Session
Date: Thursday, September 24th, 2026, 8:30am- 10:30am
If our carbon market is going to attract institutional capital at scale, its registries need to operate the same way systems of record do in other established asset classes. Today, that layer is incomplete, and the rules that will complete it are being written now—in national registry builds, Article 6 and CORSIA transfers, an ISO technical specification, and advancing registry oversight.
Setting the design principles that receive institutional capital at scale, their registries need to operate as systems of record whose processes should build on this foundational work—touching legal title, data standardization, interoperability, and credit history—and this cannot be done by any single carbon-crediting body (CCB) alone.
Hosted by the VCM+ Collaborative's Financial Infrastructure for Carbon Markets (FICM) workstream, this invitation-only working session convenes the principals of the CCBs and public crediting frameworks that operate the market's registries, each with one in-house registry or technical lead.

In climate action circles, the idea we need a “portfolio approach” is one that almost everyone can agree with. But what that portfolio looks like in practice often varies dramatically person-to-person, institution-to-institution.
This is particularly evident in carbon market debates—most everybody agrees systemic climate action requires technological and natural climate solutions, reductions and removals, supply chain and global impact, etc. But the debate around how to define “permanence” (or the lifespan a project must have to receive carbon finance) is contentious, is nowhere near settled, and has far-reaching consequences for the make-up of any carbon market portfolio.
The “permanence” debate is playing out in critical ways in policymaking venues – Article 6, the EU, CORSIA, U.S. state level policy, and standards frameworks – that will decide the future of carbon markets and climate finance. But this debate is rarely public, and rarely offers the various camps an opportunity to hear and address the others' concerns. Without a transparent, good faith dialogue of these critical issues, we risk shaping the future of climate finance in unintended, counterproductive ways—and there is a real risk of losing the possibility of a “portfolio approach”.
Please join a moderated discussion on permanence in carbon markets between leading thinkers in engineered removals, nature-based solutions, and atmospheric science, followed by audience Q&A.
What is a "portfolio approach"? Unpacking the carbon market's permanence debate.

Aimed at CSO’s, financial controllers, and senior leadership, as well as carbon market participants, co-hosted by VCM+ Collaborative and the Climate Liabilities and Assets Initiative with ecosystem partners Nature Broking, Kita, OSE, and others, the event will provide pragmatic and understandable insights into unlocking board climate action through accounting and how to build value for your company through engagement with the carbon markets.
The day will involve insights from experts alongside breakout discussions focused on the following themes:
-
Why it matters: how we do accounting for credit purchases impacts decisions for buyers and project developers. (e.g., opex vs. capex, long-term planning, managed asset solutions such as the permanence trust). Better financial information around climate disclosures and asset creation drives value creation and action
-
Worked examples
-
What does the FASB decision mean, and what other pathways are available?
-
Make the CFO your ally and make the case for carbon credits in their language
Unlocking Valuable Climate Action- how accounting can unlock climate action and get the CFO and Board bought in

The carbon market landscape has shifted and important demand signals are coming into view. For example:
-
CORSIA's compliance phase kicks in 2027, and will drive real demand from airlines.
-
The rules of Article 6.4 are being negotiated, and will no doubt create significant demand for some (if not all) types of high-integrity credits.
-
The European Union's post-2030 ETS would admit certified “permanent” removals from 2031 and a capped volume of international credits from 2036.
-
SBTi's new Corporate Net Zero standard adds its voluntary Ongoing Emissions Responsibility (OER) programme—voluntary today, but becoming required in 2035.
But while the prospects for demand have improved dramatically, it is not at all clear (1) how quickly or at what scale these developments will drive real market activity or (2) what types of credits / projects will benefit from, or even be allowed within, these frameworks.
This invitation-only working session will convene senior leadership from major environmental NGOs to discuss what more needs to and can be done to build scaled demand in the carbon market.

AI is beginning to reshape the carbon market -- along the entire value chain -- and presents both exciting opportunities for efficiency and scale, and concerning risks.
In this interactive workshop co-hosted by the Climate Collective and the VCM+ Collaborative, participants will pressure-test an emerging map of AI opportunities and challenges across the market, share practical experiences and risks, and road-test new approaches for translating responsible AI guidance into practice
AI x Carbon Markets: Opportunities and Challenges

Building a High-Integrity Carbon Market: The Critical Role of Community Leadership
This two-hour interactive session will explore why Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs) are critical to the success and integrity of carbon markets, and what it will take to scale community-led carbon projects. The first hour will feature case studies from the Amazon, Southeast Asia, Africa, and North America that demonstrate different models of community leadership while also surfacing the practical challenges communities face engaging with carbon markets as they currently operate.
The session will also highlight emerging tools and approaches—including capacity building, project development frameworks, finance, and social integrity tools—that can help create the enabling conditions for community-led projects to succeed and scale.
The second hour will shift from learning to action through facilitated breakout discussions organized around different parts of the carbon market ecosystem, including project developers, funders and buyers, MRV and technology providers, IPs and LCs, NGOs, and other intermediaries. Each group will identify concrete actions it can take to strengthen community leadership, ownership, and decision-making. The goal is to move community leadership from the margins of the carbon market to a core component of how high-integrity carbon projects are designed, financed, implemented, and scaled.
